Cameron Clearances

Many Camerons outside Scotland have difficulty tracing their Scottish origins - particularly if they came from humble stock.

I know that I had that difficulty.

Part of the problem has been that little has been spoken of the clearances that took place on the Cameron lands. In fact, many would deny that such clearances even took place. They did take place and to deny it is profoundly disrespectful to the unfortunate souls who were victims of those clearances. They…

Cameron Hunting Tartan

The website for the Scottish Register of Tartans lists two different Cameron hunting tartans. The first is called Cameron Hunting and the second Cameron of Lochiel (Hunting). Is the use of the Cameron of Lochiel (Hunting) tartan restricted to Lochiel and members of his immediate family as the standard Cameron of Lochiel tartan is? I ask because the tartan listed as Cameron of Lochiel (Hunting) is the one that I was already familiar with…

Chalmers Family in Virginia

I am a descendant of Charles Leven Chalmers, who was born in Virginia in 1825 and moved to Louisiana sometime before 1860. According to our family tradition, we are descended from Jacobites who were banished to America after Culloden, but I have not been able to find any records mentioning my great-great-grandfather or his ancestry prior to his relocation to Louisiana, so I have been unable to confirm this. If anyone has any advice or knowledge of the Chalmers family in Virginia, please…

The Cameron participants in the "Ardachy" group show a strong relationship to several Ulster families. This could hint at residence in Argyll with some family members migrating to lands owned by a landlord with holdings in both Scotland and Ulster. Colla Uais was a high king of Ireland. Circa 325CE Colla Uais seized Ulster subsequently…

With Tristan in Scotland

A final report from First Lighter Tristan Sanders

As you all have read in my last letter the last weekend I was in Lochaber we had a wonderful farewell dinner. I said my goodbyes to all the friends and family I had made in my time over there that had made my stay so welcoming as though I was home away from home.

From there I had a long trip home catching a train from Fort William to Glasgow where I then had to spend the…
